From the Hudson to the Shawangunks: the Erie and O&W Railroads
The Erie Railroad arrived in Orange County in the 1840’s and boosted the county’s business environment. Dairy production grew strongly and anthracite coal from Pennsylvania powered the county’s growing industrial base. Some 30 years later the O&W Railroad, a regional rail line, arrived in Orange County. Both the Erie and the O&W had major rail yards in Middletown making that city an important transportation hub. Come hear Bob McCue describe the
changes brought about by these two railroads and why they were so important to the mid-Hudson Valley.
