At the southern border of Orange County’s Town of Mount Hope is the small hamlet of Finchville. Come hear Stephen Skye, historian of the Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation, tell how two boys born in the hamlet played important roles in American history. In 1779 James Finch fed the American militia breakfast when they passed by his Mount Hope farm on the way to Minisink Ford. Though the Americans were defeated in the battle that ensued, their presence helped convince the British that the American troops would not be easily overcome. About half a century later in 1836, Coe F. Young who had been born in Mount Hope would make his way to the D&H Canal. By 1864 he had been appointed the canal’s general superintendent and with the company’s president, Thomas Dickson began transforming the D&H into a railroad.
