SUMMARY:Saturday Night Music Appreciation Society With The Storyville Serenaders Hot Jazz and Blues
DESCRIPTION:The Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation is happy to announce the next concert of its 50th Anniversary Season and the next gathering of The Saturday Night Music Appreciation Society where we will present a concert with The Storyville Serenaders featuring Jeff Weinman on the piano and Ms. Doli Grace vocalist and comedian. They will be performing on Saturday Night August 26th at 7 PM. @ The D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center Pavilion located at 58 Hoag Road in Cuddebackville\, NY. \nThe Storyville Serenaders show is a trip back in time to a prolific era between 1910 and 1930 when hot jazz and blues tunes of the New Orleans tradition were forming in districts all over the city. One of those areas was the famed Storyville Red Light district. Jazz was new and piano players and singers entertained from the stages of vaudeville theaters\, back alley speakeasies\, and in the notorious Storyville houses of ill repute. Jeff Wineman\, with his classic stride and barrel house blues sound\, and the smooth and sultry vocals of Ms. Doli Grace will transport you back to a time when performers were old- fashioned entertainers who brought theatrical flair and vaudeville-style comedy to their shows.\nYou will hear classic tunes from Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Ethel Waters\, Spencer Williams\, and Bessie Smith as well as classic jazz tunes from the American Songbook. Come down to the show and let these two troupers lead you down the Path To Happy! \nPlease come out and enjoy a wonderful night of music and maybe a little dancing. This event will be held under the pavilion\, so bring a comfy chair and a light wrap if it starts to turn cooler. \nEvery event at the NEVERSINK VALLEY MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND INNOVATION goes to support our ongoing mission to educate and illuminate the history of the Neversink Valley and the D&H Canal. The Museum is open on Sunday from Noon till four pm\, so please stop by for a tour or just to say hello.\nBecome a Member of the Museum and receive a discount at all events\, Go to www.neversinkmuseum.org and use our DONATION and MEMBERSHIP BUTTONS to conveniently Join or Support the Museum. \nOur SATURDAY NIGHT MUSIC APPRECIATION SOCIETY is curated by our dear friends Anne and Mike Baglione. They have been making our concerts happen for the past seven years. \n$7.00 general admission\, $5.00 Museum members \n  \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/140117829917709/?context=create&previousaction=create&ref=5&page_id_source=120399901341749&sid_create=3879859374&action_history=[%7B%22surface%22%3A%22create_dialog%22%2C%22mechanism%22%3A%22page_create_dialog%22%2C%22extra_data%22%3A[]%7D]&has_source=1

SUMMARY:The Saturday Night Music Appreciation Society Featuring: Jeff Weinman on the Piano
DESCRIPTION:Jeff ‘Deputy Dawg’ Weinman\nJeff Weinman plays old timey “Barrelhouse”  piano\, a combination of ragtime\,  blues and “honky tonk” stride piano styles that came out of the saloons and ghettos of New Orleans in the early decades of the 20th century. His influences include the music of Spencer Williams\, James  P. Johnson\, Jellyroll Morton\, Louis Armstrong\, Sidney Bechet\,  King Oliver\, Fats Waller\, and Bessie Smith.  He also is a student of old vaudeville acts and burlesque comedy. \nJeff will be performing an array of Dixieland standards\,  Hokum blues\, and Tin Pan Alley novelties. He tells jokes too. \nWe asked Jeff about why he continues to play this music and about his musical influences. “I play music that speaks to me with what I hear as an honest voice. It does not matter that it is from another time. I feel this music is good for people because it expresses great sadness and great joy without irony and without the burden of hipness\, or a jaded view of life.  When Louis Armstrong picked up his horn in 925 to go to Chicago to join up with King Oliver\, it was a ticket to leaving the ghetto behind and to become an “Ambassador to the World” . \nNo other musician was so loved by so many. This man changed the world  without the internet\, without television\, and in fact when only 25% of homes had a radio\, and 10% had a Victrola. Somehow he was beloved by the whole world though the clarity and emotional truth of his performances and the humor and humanity expressed in his music.” \nWe also asked him if he likes other kinds of music.  “I  have realized that our American Hot Jazz is much like other  “folk” music forms of other downtrodden peoples: Gypsy music of the Balkans\, Klezmer music of Eastern Europe\, Mexican Mariachi\, Afrocubano\, Taino > music\, and American Appalachian old timey fiddle music.  They all take great skill and discipline and years of practice  to play well. Each of these musical styles succeed at expressing  profound emotion with clarity\, sans irony\, and with little commercial gain.” \nJeff went on to add\, “People play all of these forms to achieve at their best\, a transcendence of suffering.  That is why these forms of music can be considered legitimately to be great Art\, and should be honored and taught\, and certainly not forgotten. Also\, you can dance to it\, and some of it is really funny. I like funny stuff\, and old jazz and blues is full of funny stuff.” \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9rVw_eD9WM
