SUMMARY:History Talk JULY 19th @ 7PM with Sue Gardner on "Most Obedient Servant: Tracking the Life and Legacy of John Harthorn and his Militia"
DESCRIPTION:NEVERSINK VALLEY MUSEUM OF HISTORY & INNOVATION PRESENTS: \nHISTORY TALK WITH LOCAL HISTORIAN SUE GARDNER ON \n“Most Obedient Servant: Tracking the Life and Legacy of John Hathorn and his Militia” \nThe Neversink Valley Museum of History & Innovation presents a History Talk on Wednesday\, July 19th  at 7:00 PM with local historian Sue Gardner where she will be speaking about “Most Obedient Servant: Tracking the Life and Legacy of John Hathorn and his Militia” \nJohn Hathorn of Warwick has always been an enigmatic figure. But\, “The man who lost the Battle of Minisink” was a successful military leader\, politician\, and activist\, he served in the first and fourth Congresses of the United States and was acquainted with many of the important people of his day. Yet his life has remained in the shadows due to the destruction of his collected papers by his family shortly after his death.  A search spanning more than 15 years has turned up a great deal about Hathorn\, his close involvement with the early days of the nation and New York State\, and the activities of his men during the Revolutionary War.  This illustrated presentation by Sue Gardner will trace evidence of this forgotten founding father and the men who were under his command. \nLocal Historian Sue Gardner is Deputy Town Historian for Warwick\, NY and Local History Librarian at Albert Wisner Public Library also in Warwick\, NY.  Sue founded The Friends of Hathorn House in recent years to help preserve the historic home and the legacy of Hathorn and his regiment. \n                  This History Talk will be held July 19\, 2017\, at 7:00 PM at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, (just off Route 209) Cuddebackville\, NY. SUMMARY:HISTORY TALK June 14th @ 7 PM with Frank Salvati “QUEEN ESTHER'S REVENGE!”
DESCRIPTION:One fateful day\, as the United States continued to be engaged in a great and earnest struggle for freedom from the exactions and tyranny of the British government\, a massacre occurred in the Wyoming Valley in North Eastern Pennsylvania. Legends\, poems\, and songs are then written to commemorate that bloody day July 3RD\,1778. \nJoin favorite local historian Frank Salvati as he tells of one of the most brutal and controversial episodes of the American Revolution. Frank weaves the history of the Wyoming Massacre along with the tale of Esther Montour known as “Queen Esther”. Of her\, Frank says “The Seneca Chieftainess did not share her tribe’s hatred of the Americans until they killed her only son Gencho.” Esther then vowed\, “They will never forget what they have done to me because they will never forget what I will do to them.” \nCome and learn more about these fascinating times as speaker Frank Salvati\, shares his knowledge of The French and Indian War\, early Colonial America and these Native American peoples.  Frank Salvati is a resident of Port Jervis\, New York.  He is a passionate student of the Indian wars\, with a particular interest in the North Eastern United States.  He is a popular speaker on the French and Indian Wars\, the American Revolution and the War of 1812. \n                  This event will be held June 14TH\, 2017\, at 7:00 PM at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, (just off Route 209) Cuddebackville\, NY.   \nThe Neversink Valley Museum is open Sundays from noon until 4:00 PM through October 29 and by appointment.
