DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun afternoon under the pavilion at the D&H Canal Park for an OCTOBERFEST MUSIC CONCERT featuring The Adlers Band – a fabulous band that has musical roots that extend back to September 1979 at the hands of founder and guitarist Adi Adler\, singer and “band mother” Tina Adler\, along with their son Barry on accordion and Eddie Spatarella- “band brother” on drums. Austrian and German Alpine music formed the core\, and as time progressed\, additional musicians to the band- including one of New Jersey’s top Polka band leaders of the 1950’s and 1960’s Tony Szurka helped to launch this band into performing its Polish repertoire and nudging the band in a new positive direction. As musical tastes had changed and time marched on into the new Millennium\, The Adlers Band adapted to the changes keeping its core music that remains timeless.

DESCRIPTION:Original caption: John A. Roebling\, German-born engineer. Engraving\, 1883.\nIn 1842\, Roebling patented his own version of a strong yet malleable wire rope. In the same year\, he successfully demonstrated the use of wire rope on the Allegheny Portage Railroad. Literally and figuratively\, Roebling’s wire rope helped to connect our world in novel ways\, eventually being used for suspension bridges\, inclined railways\, elevators\, and telephone communications. Roebling became a successful “practical dreamer.” \n \n\nProfessor Paul King will present “Roebling Before the Bridge.” The presentation will highlight the evolution of Roebling’s built work from his first bridges in Pittsburgh\, to his four suspension aqueducts for the Delaware and Hudson Canal\, to the first Railroad Bridge to span the Niagara Gorge\, to the Cincinnati-Covington Bridge – his first bridge to use large masonry towers a direct predecessor to his final work the Brooklyn Bridge. Along the way\, Roebling refined techniques in the manufacture of wire rope\, conducted experiments in materials science and patented bridge building methods that changed how bridges were built.\n\nWith: Professor Paul C. Sept. 11\, 7:00 PM; Steve Skye: Finchville\, Mount Hope \nAt the southern border of Orange County’s Town of Mount Hope is the small hamlet of Finchville. Come hear Stephen Skye\, historian of the Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation\, tell how two boys born in the hamlet played important roles in American history. In 1779 James Finch fed the American militia breakfast when they passed by his Mount Hope farm on the way to Minisink Ford. Though the Americans were defeated in the battle that ensued\, their presence helped convince the British that the American troops would not be easily overcome. About half a century later in 1836\, Coe F. Young who had been born in Mount Hope would make his way to the D&H Canal. By 1864 he had been appointed the canal’s general superintendent and with the company’s president\, Thomas Dickson began transforming the D&H into a railroad.

Aug. 14\, 7:00 PM; Martha Capwell Fox: The Lehigh Navigation\nA History talk with Martha Capwell Fox the museum and archives coordinator for the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor will do a talk about the Lehigh Navigation.\nCome join us in examining the great rival to the Delaware and Hudson Canal… the Lehigh Navigation. The Lehigh was built a few years before the completion of the D&H and carried a significant amount of anthracite to tide-water: the Hudson and the Delaware. Comparing the engineering of the Lehigh to the innovations of the D&H will provide us with insights pertaining to each canal. The D&H and Lehigh were rivals and provide us with differing business models. For example the Lehigh smelted iron ore whilst the D&H never became involved in that line of business. \nThe Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company was a prominent coal mining and shipping company first established in 1820 with the merger of the Lehigh Coal Mining Company and the Lehigh Navigation Company\, both of which operated in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania beginning in 1818. The Company owned and operated an extensive system of coal mines in Pennsylvania’s Carbon and Schuylkill Counties\, two canals\, and several railroads and railways. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company is credited with shaping the course of the American industrial revolution in Pennsylvania\, as it contributed to innovation in transportation\, manufacturing\, and use of natural resources. \nThis History Talk will be held on Wednesday\, August 14th 2019 at 7 PM at the D&H Canal Park Visitor’s Center at 58 Hoag Road (just off route 209) in Cuddebackville\, NY 12729. DESCRIPTION:1932 Post Card of Lake Awosting in Minnewaska\, NY \nCUDDEBACKVILLE\, NY: The Neversink Valley Museum of History & Innovation has engaged Museum Historian Steve Skye for its History Talk Lecture Series on Wednesday\, July 10\, 2019\, at 7:00 pm when he will be speaking about “Lake Awosting: A Unique D&H Reservoir” \nLake Awosting is one of 6 lakes on top of the Shawangunk ridge called the Sky Lakes. Located in Ulster County\, NY Minnewaska State Park Preserve these lakes are situated on the dramatic Shawangunk Mountain ridge\, which rises more than 2\,000 feet above sea level and is surrounded by rugged\, rocky terrain. Four of the five sky lakes on the Shawangunk Ridge lie within the preserve: Lake Minnewaska\, Lake Awosting\, Mud Pond (also known as Lake Haseco)\, and Lake Maratanza; Mohonk Lake\, is on the property of the Mohonk Mountain House to the north of Minnewaska. \nLake Awosting is roughly three times as large as Lake Minnewaska\, with a length of about one and eighth miles (1.8 km) and a maximum width of about one-quarter mile (0.4 km) mile. They are called Sky Lakes because the water they contain falls from the sky as rainwater. Consequently\, these lakes are all considered to be acidic from acid-rain from air pollution caused by coal-fired industries to the west of us. Lake Awosting pH has been an acidic 4.5 for a long time according to the USGS reports. \nMinnewaska was originally built as a resort by Alfred Smiley in the 1870s\, complete with two hotels and many amenities. However\, Minnewaska was also designed to be a nature preserve. Its carriage roads and trails offered visitors the chance to enjoy and appreciate nature\, setting the stage for its current incarnation as New York’s largest state Park Preserve at 22\,000 acres. \nThe D&H canal relied heavily on the system of manmade lakes and feeders to support a constant flow of water into the Canal to maintain the depth of the water from between 4 and 6 feet throughout its years of operation. The Summit level reservoirs all drained via the Canal into the Delaware River watershed\, Lake Awosting drains via the Rondout River\, part of the Hudson River watershed. The Awosting is also unique in that it is one of the last D&H reservoirs put into place in 1870. Published: N.Y. : Martin\, Johnson & Co. publishers\, c1856\nFrank says “Many people have false notions of Brent’s role in the Iroquois Confederacy\, and his association with the British during the Revolutionary War.” Joseph Brant (March 1743 – November 24\, 1807; Mohawk name: Thayendanegea) was a well-known Mohawk on both sides of the Atlantic\, and a native New Yorker who was a military and political leader closely associated with Great Britain during and after the American Revolution. \nWhile the war was being waged in pitched battles in the chief colonies\, British and Indian forces fought a guerrilla war in the west\, and many villages were raided. The fighting was fierce in the Mohawk Valley of New York\, and the frontier was in an almost constant state of terror. \nIt was cold\, foggy and snowy in Cherry Valley\, New York\, that morning in history\, November 11\, 1778\, when British Loyalists and their Mohawk and Seneca Indian allies attacked a village and fort east of Cooperstown near Lake Otsego in New York State during the American Revolutionary War\, killing scores of soldiers and civilians in the Cherry Valley Massacre. \nIn his History Talk\, Frank “will correct the misconceptions associated with Brant and show what role the Six Nations played in the Revolutionary War\, particularly the Wyoming Valley and the infamous Cherry Valley Massacre.” \nFrank Salvati is a resident of Port Jervis\, New York.  He is a passionate student of the Indian wars\, with a particular interest in the North Eastern United States.  He is a popular speaker on the French and Indian Wars\, the American Revolution and the War of 1812. \nSo please join us for an interesting evening of Local History and Revolutionary War Stories. DESCRIPTION:The Neversink Valley Museum is opening its new 2019 Season of History Talks on the afternoon of April 13th with local historian and civil war re-enactor Yvonne Bigney who will take her audience on what she calls “a journey into the other side of the Civil War” – the feminine side in a History Talk about “Women in the Civil War”\nWe hear much about the generals and battles of the War Between the States\, but not very much about the women who nursed the wounded and dying on the battlefields\, risked their lives on secret missions\, fought right alongside the men\, or ran their family farms and raised their children while their menfolk were away.\nThe audience will meet soldiers such as Kady Brownell\, who carried regimental flags into battle\, and nurses like Mary Anne “Mother” Bickerdyke\, who was admired by General Sherman for her work on behalf of his disabled soldiers. “Mother” had to fight with the doctors to get his solider’s the best of care but never with Sherman or Grant! “She outranks me\,” the famous Union general wryly said of her when his subordinates complained about her dictatorial methods.\nThe elegant Rose Greenhow used her charm and social connections to work for the Confederacy as a spy.\nMary A. Livermore\, an abolitionist\, and activist with the U.S. Sanitary Commission was one of many women\, like Clara Barton and Dorothea Dix\, who introduced modern concepts of medical treatment\, hygiene\, and compassion to a world where appalling casualty rates among combatants were considered acceptable.\nYvonne Bigney has been a Civil War re-enactor with the 124th New York State Volunteers and the 15th New York State Volunteer Cavalry. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation is presenting a concert of Traditional Irish Music with the wonderful local band THE TARA MINSTRELS. The concert will be held at the D7H Canal Park\, 58 Hoag Road in Cuddebackville\, NY 12729 Just off Route 209. The concert will be held outside under the pavilion behind the Visitor’s Center so bring a lawn chair or blanket and some bug spray and be prepared to have a rousing evening of Irish Music. \nThe name of the band comes from the Hill of Tara\, known as Temair in gaeilge\, it was once the ancient seat of power in Ireland – 142 kings are said to have reigned there in prehistoric and historic times. In ancient Irish religion and mythology\, Temair was the sacred place of dwelling for the gods and was the entrance to the otherworld. Saint Patrick is said to have come to Tara to confront the ancient religion of the pagans at its most powerful site. \nThe Tara Minstrels are focused on providing authentic Traditional Irish Music and entertainment in the tri-state NY\, NJ\, PA area. Unlike other “Irish Bands” they do not wear green all the time\, drink green beer\, or speak with fake accents. DESCRIPTION:NEVERSINK VALLEY MUSEUM OF HISTORY & INNOVATION PRESENTS: HISTORY TALK\nwith Bob Barth on the ” The Morris Canal”\n\nNeversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation presents the fifth installment of its History Lecture Series on Wednesday\, August 8\, 2018\, at 7:00 pm when Bob Barth will speak about The Morris Canal at the D&H Canal Park Visitors’ Center\, 58 Hoag Road (just off Route 209 in Cuddebackville\, NY). Light refreshments will be served. \nFrom the NJ Canal Society’s Website:\nThe Morris Canal was the brainchild of Morristown businessman George Macculloch\, who envisioned a commerce route that could surmount North Jersey’s rugged terrain to ship coal\, iron ore\, farm produce and other products across the state. To conquer an unprecedented 1\,674-foot change in elevation – 760 feet from the Delaware River at Phillipsburg up to Lake Hopatcong\, the summit level\, and 914 feet back down to tidewater at Newark Bay – the Morris Canal used a series of locks and a new innovation\, the inclined plane. Operated from 1831 to 1924\, the Morris Canal was considered an engineering marvel of its time\, but\, by the end of its life\, it had been surpassed by railroads as a shipping route. \nAlthough employed on a smaller scale on English canals\, the inclined plane was adapted for the Morris Canal and used to conquer changes of elevation anywhere from 35 feet to 100 feet. The canal boats were floated onto a cradle car\, which was pulled out of the water\, then up or down on iron rails to the next section of canal. DESCRIPTION:NEVERSINK VALLEY MUSEUM OF HISTORY & INNOVATION PRESENTS: HISTORY TALK WITH MUSEUM HISTORIAN STEVE SKYE “PALATINE GERMANS AND FRENCH HUGUENOTS”\n\nThe Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation presents the fourth installment of its History Lecture Series on Wednesday\, July 12\, 2018 at 7:00 pm when its historian will speak about “Palatines and Huguenots” at the D&H Canal Park Visitors’ Center\, 58 Hoag Road (just off Route 209 in Cuddebackville\, NY). Light refreshments will be served. \nSteve Skye\, historian of the Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation\, will discuss the hardy Palatine Germans who emigrated from the Rhine Valley in Germany to the British colonies of the Hudson Valley. He will also discuss their religious kinsfolk\, the French Huguenots of eastern France. Both communities suffered the depredations of 17th-century warfare and the starvation of crop failures and left the Old World for the New. \nThe Protestants of mid-Europe occupied a 200 mile stretch of land from mid-Switzerland to Belgium with the French border running down the middle. They were a diverse group including German-speaking Swiss\, Huguenots and Palatines as well as Dutch-speaking Flemings and French-speaking Walloons from Belgium. In America\, the Palatines became amalgamated with other German-speaking groups to become the people we call today “Pennsylvania Dutch”. The middle-class craftsmen of the Huguenot diaspora to this day are proud of their 16th-century background. \nCome to learn about how the Palatines finally found a patron in Queen Anne of Great Britain and how she enabled them to cross the ocean and settle in her New York colony. In fact\, the settlement of Newburgh was established by the Palatines. Many of these colonists eventually left New York to join other Palatines in Pennsylvania and the upper Midwest. You will also get an appreciation of how the Huguenots came to found many of early America’s industries including\, glass and silk making and how this literate and well-educated group played an important role in the American Revolution. \nSteve Skye is a resident of Mount Hope\, New York. He is an enthusiastic student of 19th century American history with a particular interest in the North Eastern United States. Dairy production grew strongly and anthracite coal from Pennsylvania powered the county’s growing industrial base. Some 30 years later the O&W Railroad\, a regional rail line\, arrived in Orange County. Both the Erie and the O&W had major rail yards in Middletown making that city an important transportation hub. DESCRIPTION:Please join Robert J. Honders\, Sr.\, the Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation’s engineering consultant\, as he explains how the D&H canal operated and what needs to be done to safely restore its source of water. Rob will present his talk on Wed\, April 18 at the D&H Canal Park’s visitor’s center in Cuddebackville.\nThis is an important presentation in the efforts of restoring a controlled source of water to the canal and is supported by the Facebook “Wet the Canal” Internet group. There will be two presentations: at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM and admission will be free.\nRob has been involved with the D&H Canal since the storm of 1985. He has been a consultant to former Parks Commissioner\, Graham Skea\, and built the Canal Packet Boat the Neversink Valley Museum used for tourist education and entertainment before the canal lost its water source. Rob understands the hydrology of the Neversink River at Cuddebackville and knows what needs to be done to assure a safe and reliable source of water in the park’s section of canal.
