Livermore\, an abolitionist\, and activist with the U.S. Sanitary Commission was one of many women\, like Clara Barton and Dorothea Dix\, who introduced modern concepts of medical treatment\, hygiene\, and compassion to a world where appalling casualty rates among combatants were considered acceptable.\nYvonne Bigney has been a Civil War re-enactor with the 124th New York State Volunteers and the 15th New York State Volunteer Cavalry. A popular lecturer for more than 25 years\, she will cover many other notable women of the period\, some famous and some not. \nThis History Talk will be held Saturday\, April 13\, 2019\, at 2:00 PM at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, (just off Route 209) Cuddebackville\, NY. SUMMARY:History Talk: The D & H Amusement Parks by Stephen Skye
DESCRIPTION:History Talk by Stephen Skye\, Museum Historian. \nDuring the 19th century\, the D&H Canal Company built amusement parks on its lands. Amusement on the canal went from simple canal boat rides to a much more elaborate facility on its gravity railroad during the late 19th century at Farview\, PA. When the canal company expanded into trolley networks in the early 20th century\, amusement parks were established at the end of their trolley lines. Come to hear about the establishment of America’s amusement park industry during the turn of the turn of the century. \nThis event will be held September 12th\, at 7:00 PM at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, (just off Route 209) Cuddebackville\, NY. \nThe Neversink Valley Museum is open Sundays from noon until 4:00 PM through October 29 and by appointment. SUMMARY:An Evening of Traditional Irish Music with "The Tara Minstrels"
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation is presenting a concert of Traditional Irish Music with the wonderful local band THE TARA MINSTRELS. The concert will be held at the D7H Canal Park\, 58 Hoag Road in Cuddebackville\, NY 12729 Just off Route 209. The concert will be held outside under the pavilion behind the Visitor’s Center so bring a lawn chair or blanket and some bug spray and be prepared to have a rousing evening of Irish Music. \nThe name of the band comes from the Hill of Tara\, known as Temair in gaeilge\, it was once the ancient seat of power in Ireland – 142 kings are said to have reigned there in prehistoric and historic times. In ancient Irish religion and mythology\, Temair was the sacred place of dwelling for the gods and was the entrance to the otherworld. Saint Patrick is said to have come to Tara to confront the ancient religion of the pagans at its most powerful site. \nThe Tara Minstrels are focused on providing authentic Traditional Irish Music and entertainment in the tri-state NY\, NJ\, PA area. Unlike other “Irish Bands” they do not wear green all the time\, drink green beer\, or speak with fake accents. We simply play Traditional Irish Music as you would hear at the pubs in Ireland. \nThis Concert will be held on August 31\, 2018\, at 7:00 PM at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, (just off Route 209) Cuddebackville\, NY. Suggested donation is $5.00 for members and $7.00 for non-members. SUMMARY:HISTORY TALK with Bob Barth on the " The Morris Canal"
DESCRIPTION:NEVERSINK VALLEY MUSEUM OF HISTORY & INNOVATION PRESENTS: HISTORY TALK\nwith Bob Barth on the ” The Morris Canal”\n\nNeversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation presents the fifth installment of its History Lecture Series on Wednesday\, August 8\, 2018\, at 7:00 pm when Bob Barth will speak about The Morris Canal at the D&H Canal Park Visitors’ Center\, 58 Hoag Road (just off Route 209 in Cuddebackville\, NY). Light refreshments will be served. \nFrom the NJ Canal Society’s Website:\nThe Morris Canal was the brainchild of Morristown businessman George Macculloch\, who envisioned a commerce route that could surmount North Jersey’s rugged terrain to ship coal\, iron ore\, farm produce and other products across the state. To conquer an unprecedented 1\,674-foot change in elevation – 760 feet from the Delaware River at Phillipsburg up to Lake Hopatcong\, the summit level\, and 914 feet back down to tidewater at Newark Bay – the Morris Canal used a series of locks and a new innovation\, the inclined plane. Operated from 1831 to 1924\, the Morris Canal was considered an engineering marvel of its time\, but\, by the end of its life\, it had been surpassed by railroads as a shipping route. \nAlthough employed on a smaller scale on English canals\, the inclined plane was adapted for the Morris Canal and used to conquer changes of elevation anywhere from 35 feet to 100 feet. The canal boats were floated onto a cradle car\, which was pulled out of the water\, then up or down on iron rails to the next section of canal. Those iron rails were supported by heavy stone sleepers\, which on several of the planes can still be seen\, often with a groove worn into them by the thick cable that raised and lowered the cradle car. \n \nThis History Talk will be held Wednesday\, August 8\, 2018\, at 7:00 PM at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, (just off Route 209) Cuddebackville\, NY. SUMMARY:HISTORY TALK WITH MUSEUM HISTORIAN STEVE SKYE “PALATINE GERMANS AND FRENCH HUGUENOTS”
DESCRIPTION:NEVERSINK VALLEY MUSEUM OF HISTORY & INNOVATION PRESENTS: HISTORY TALK WITH MUSEUM HISTORIAN STEVE SKYE “PALATINE GERMANS AND FRENCH HUGUENOTS”\n\nThe Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation presents the fourth installment of its History Lecture Series on Wednesday\, July 12\, 2018 at 7:00 pm when its historian will speak about “Palatines and Huguenots” at the D&H Canal Park Visitors’ Center\, 58 Hoag Road (just off Route 209 in Cuddebackville\, NY). Light refreshments will be served. \nSteve Skye\, historian of the Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation\, will discuss the hardy Palatine Germans who emigrated from the Rhine Valley in Germany to the British colonies of the Hudson Valley. He will also discuss their religious kinsfolk\, the French Huguenots of eastern France. Both communities suffered the depredations of 17th-century warfare and the starvation of crop failures and left the Old World for the New. \nThe Protestants of mid-Europe occupied a 200 mile stretch of land from mid-Switzerland to Belgium with the French border running down the middle. They were a diverse group including German-speaking Swiss\, Huguenots and Palatines as well as Dutch-speaking Flemings and French-speaking Walloons from Belgium. In America\, the Palatines became amalgamated with other German-speaking groups to become the people we call today “Pennsylvania Dutch”. The middle-class craftsmen of the Huguenot diaspora to this day are proud of their 16th-century background. \nCome to learn about how the Palatines finally found a patron in Queen Anne of Great Britain and how she enabled them to cross the ocean and settle in her New York colony. In fact\, the settlement of Newburgh was established by the Palatines. Many of these colonists eventually left New York to join other Palatines in Pennsylvania and the upper Midwest. You will also get an appreciation of how the Huguenots came to found many of early America’s industries including\, glass and silk making and how this literate and well-educated group played an important role in the American Revolution. \nSteve Skye is a resident of Mount Hope\, New York. He is an enthusiastic student of 19th century American history with a particular interest in the North Eastern United States. He is especially interested in the evolution of an American agrarian society into an industrial giant. \nThis History Talk will be held July 12\, 2018\, at 7:00 PM at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, (just off Route 209) Cuddebackville\, NY. Suggested donation is $5.00 for members and $7.00 for non-members. Light refreshments will be served                \nThe Neversink Valley Museum is open Sundays from noon until 4:00 pm through October 28 and by appointment. SUMMARY:From the Hudson to the Shawangunks: the Erie and O&W Railroads
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a History Talk with Bob McCue Titled:\nFrom the Hudson to the Shawangunks: the Erie and O&W Railroads \nThe Erie Railroad arrived in Orange County in the 1840’s and boosted the county’s business environment. Dairy production grew strongly and anthracite coal from Pennsylvania powered the county’s growing industrial base. Some 30 years later the O&W Railroad\, a regional rail line\, arrived in Orange County. Both the Erie and the O&W had major rail yards in Middletown making that city an important transportation hub. Come hear Bob McCue describe the\nchanges brought about by these two railroads and why they were so important to the mid-Hudson Valley. \nThis event takes place at The D&H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, Cuddebackville\, NY 12729 Just off Route 209 \nSuggested Donation: $5.00 Members $7.00 Non-Members

SUMMARY:The Neversink Valley Museum Wednesday Night History Talks with Bill Merchant " The History of the DuPuy Canal House"
DESCRIPTION:History Talk on the DuPuy Canal House History of the Canal House 1797 – Simeon DePuy\, one of the most prominent citizens of High Falls\, NY opened the Stone House Tavern.\n1825 – Work on the Delaware-Hudson Canal began\, a project destined to link towns from Rondout-on-the-Hudson to Honesdale\, PA. Simeon DePuy\, by then an experienced restaurateur\, profitted well during this time catering to hungry and thirsty Canal workers.\n1826 – The D & H Canal opened ushering in a new era of cargo transport that operated for over 70 years. Simeon DePuy’s eatery was the site of Lock 16. His business flourished as the canalmen\, called the “roughest\, toughest\, fightingest” bunch of the profession\, refueled at the tavern-on-the-water.\n1870 – The D & H Canal entered a prosperous decade\, which would be its last successful era.\n1872 – 1\,000\,000 tons of anthracite coal were weighed through the locks at Eddyville. It was coal that gave the Canal its start. Ironically\, it was coal that would force its closing. Since the Canal could not operate during the winter\, America welcomed in the Great Railroad. Trains were able to move the coal quicker\, cheaper\, and in all seasons of the year. High Falls\, a thriving community with five stores\, five saloons\, and two butcher shops\, began to lose its luster.\n1899 – The D & H Canal Company sold the Canal with all of its “franchises\, rights and privileges” to Samuel D. Coykendall for $10\,000. But within a few years\, the Canal closed for good\, with the “Ulster Queen” the last boat to make a scheduled run. The Canal\, once the Interstate Highway of the 19th Century\, became merely an unused\, overgrown ditch.

SUMMARY:Saturday Night Music Appreciation Society With The Storyville Serenaders Hot Jazz and Blues
DESCRIPTION:The Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation is happy to announce the next concert of its 50th Anniversary Season and the next gathering of The Saturday Night Music Appreciation Society where we will present a concert with The Storyville Serenaders featuring Jeff Weinman on the piano and Ms. Doli Grace vocalist and comedian. They will be performing on Saturday Night August 26th at 7 PM. @ The D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center Pavilion located at 58 Hoag Road in Cuddebackville\, NY. \nThe Storyville Serenaders show is a trip back in time to a prolific era between 1910 and 1930 when hot jazz and blues tunes of the New Orleans tradition were forming in districts all over the city. One of those areas was the famed Storyville Red Light district. Jazz was new and piano players and singers entertained from the stages of vaudeville theaters\, back alley speakeasies\, and in the notorious Storyville houses of ill repute. Jeff Wineman\, with his classic stride and barrel house blues sound\, and the smooth and sultry vocals of Ms. Doli Grace will transport you back to a time when performers were old- fashioned entertainers who brought theatrical flair and vaudeville-style comedy to their shows.\nYou will hear classic tunes from Louis Armstrong\, Jelly Roll Morton\, Ethel Waters\, Spencer Williams\, and Bessie Smith as well as classic jazz tunes from the American Songbook. Come down to the show and let these two troupers lead you down the Path To Happy! \nPlease come out and enjoy a wonderful night of music and maybe a little dancing. This event will be held under the pavilion\, so bring a comfy chair and a light wrap if it starts to turn cooler. \nEvery event at the NEVERSINK VALLEY MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND INNOVATION goes to support our ongoing mission to educate and illuminate the history of the Neversink Valley and the D&H Canal. The Museum is open on Sunday from Noon till four pm\, so please stop by for a tour or just to say hello.\nBecome a Member of the Museum and receive a discount at all events\, Go to www.neversinkmuseum.org and use our DONATION and MEMBERSHIP BUTTONS to conveniently Join or Support the Museum. \nOur SATURDAY NIGHT MUSIC APPRECIATION SOCIETY is curated by our dear friends Anne and Mike Baglione. They have been making our concerts happen for the past seven years. \n$7.00 general admission\, $5.00 Museum members \n  \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/140117829917709/?context=create&previousaction=create&ref=5&page_id_source=120399901341749&sid_create=3879859374&action_history=[%7B%22surface%22%3A%22create_dialog%22%2C%22mechanism%22%3A%22page_create_dialog%22%2C%22extra_data%22%3A[]%7D]&has_source=1

SUMMARY:History Talk with Historian Steve Skye on the D&H Canal Feeders
DESCRIPTION:Join Steve Skye\, the historian at the Delaware and Hudson Museum of History and Innovation as he explores the role that the Neversink River played in the success of the D&H Canal. Crossing the southern corner of the 17-mile long Summit Level at Cuddebackville\, the Neversink helped ensure a continuous flow of water into the canal. The river was the backbone of an extensive network of reservoirs that the canal managers relied on to supply water to the canal’s highest section. Whilst some of the reservoirs emptied directly into the canal\, many of the D&H “ponds” poured their waters into the Neversink River and thence into the canal. Without the agency of the river to connect the reservoirs to the canal\, there would not have been enough water to keep the canal boats afloat during periods of drought. Today\, the reservoirs built by the canal company support summer vacation communities. In this way\, the D&H “ponds” continue to be a boon for the local economy.\nThis History Talk will be held August 9\, 2017\, at 7:00 PM at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, (just off Route 209) Cuddebackville\, NY. Suggested donation is $5.00 for members and $7.00 for non-members.\nThe Neversink Valley Museum is open Sundays from noon until 4:00 pm through October 28 and by appointment. SUMMARY:History Talk JULY 19th @ 7PM with Sue Gardner on "Most Obedient Servant: Tracking the Life and Legacy of John Harthorn and his Militia"
DESCRIPTION:NEVERSINK VALLEY MUSEUM OF HISTORY & INNOVATION PRESENTS: \nHISTORY TALK WITH LOCAL HISTORIAN SUE GARDNER ON \n“Most Obedient Servant: Tracking the Life and Legacy of John Hathorn and his Militia” \nThe Neversink Valley Museum of History & Innovation presents a History Talk on Wednesday\, July 19th  at 7:00 PM with local historian Sue Gardner where she will be speaking about “Most Obedient Servant: Tracking the Life and Legacy of John Hathorn and his Militia” \nJohn Hathorn of Warwick has always been an enigmatic figure. But\, “The man who lost the Battle of Minisink” was a successful military leader\, politician\, and activist\, he served in the first and fourth Congresses of the United States and was acquainted with many of the important people of his day. Yet his life has remained in the shadows due to the destruction of his collected papers by his family shortly after his death.  A search spanning more than 15 years has turned up a great deal about Hathorn\, his close involvement with the early days of the nation and New York State\, and the activities of his men during the Revolutionary War.  This illustrated presentation by Sue Gardner will trace evidence of this forgotten founding father and the men who were under his command. \nLocal Historian Sue Gardner is Deputy Town Historian for Warwick\, NY and Local History Librarian at Albert Wisner Public Library also in Warwick\, NY.  Sue founded The Friends of Hathorn House in recent years to help preserve the historic home and the legacy of Hathorn and his regiment. \n                  This History Talk will be held July 19\, 2017\, at 7:00 PM at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, (just off Route 209) Cuddebackville\, NY. Suggested donation is $5.00 for members and $7.00 for non-members.                 \nThe Neversink Valley Museum is open Sundays from noon until 4:00 pm through October 28 and by appointment.
