SUMMARY:Wednesday Night History Talk with FRANK SALVATI
DESCRIPTION:The Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation presents: \nA History Talk with Frank Salvati \nJuly 6th @ 7PM\n“Pontiac and His War” \nFrontier warfare at its most savage!\nIn the spring of 1763\, the Lenape (Delaware)\, Huron\, Miami\, Ottawa\, and Shawnee tribes all used force to resist the British Colonists. Mislabeled ‘The Conspiracy of Pontiac’ by historian Francis Parkman\, it was in reality a war brought on by the British who had very little respect for the Native Americans and who continued to violate treaty after treaty; breaking promise after promise made to the tribes. \nMany chiefs played their parts in the ensuing conflict\, but the greatest among them was the Ottawa chief Obwandiyag\, whom the English called “Pontiac”. He was an imposing figure\, tall strong and heavily tattooed\, in the custom of the Ottawa. He fashioned his straight black hair in a narrow pompadour and wore silver bracelets on his arms and a collar of white plumes around his neck. He was courageous and commanded respect far beyond his own people. \nPontiac was inspired by the words of Neolin\, the Lenape Nation prophet\, who warned his people “if you allow the English among you\, you are dead. Maladies\, smallpox\, and their poison will destroy you totally.” By May 1763 Pontiac was contemplating war. With the support of the neighboring Potawatomis and Hurons\, he hatched a plan to capture Fort Detroit. When a spy revealed the plan to the British\, Pontiac laid siege instead. Historians have called the conflict that followed a “conspiracy\,” “treason\,” or an “uprising.” For Pontiac and his followers it was a war of liberation. They fought the red coats and terrorized the frontier until finally facing the inevitable and admitting defeat in July 1766. In the end\, 450 British soldiers were killed\, 2\,000 American colonists were killed and another 2\,000 colonists driven off their land. Total Indian losses are unknown. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, JULY 6th\, The History Talk will take place in the D&H Canal Park’s Visitor Center located at 58 Hoag Road\, Cuddebackville\, NY. The talk is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM. \nThe suggested donation for this lecture is $7.00 for non-members and $5.00 for Museum members. \nFor more information please contact the Museum at 845-754-8870 or email us at nvam@frontiernet.net \n

SUMMARY:The Saturday Night Music Appreciation Society Featuring: Jeff Weinman on the Piano
DESCRIPTION:Jeff ‘Deputy Dawg’ Weinman\nJeff Weinman plays old timey “Barrelhouse”  piano\, a combination of ragtime\,  blues and “honky tonk” stride piano styles that came out of the saloons and ghettos of New Orleans in the early decades of the 20th century. His influences include the music of Spencer Williams\, James  P. Johnson\, Jellyroll Morton\, Louis Armstrong\, Sidney Bechet\,  King Oliver\, Fats Waller\, and Bessie Smith.  He also is a student of old vaudeville acts and burlesque comedy. \nJeff will be performing an array of Dixieland standards\,  Hokum blues\, and Tin Pan Alley novelties. He tells jokes too. \nWe asked Jeff about why he continues to play this music and about his musical influences. “I play music that speaks to me with what I hear as an honest voice. It does not matter that it is from another time. I feel this music is good for people because it expresses great sadness and great joy without irony and without the burden of hipness\, or a jaded view of life.  When Louis Armstrong picked up his horn in 925 to go to Chicago to join up with King Oliver\, it was a ticket to leaving the ghetto behind and to become an “Ambassador to the World” . \nNo other musician was so loved by so many. This man changed the world  without the internet\, without television\, and in fact when only 25% of homes had a radio\, and 10% had a Victrola. Somehow he was beloved by the whole world though the clarity and emotional truth of his performances and the humor and humanity expressed in his music.” \nWe also asked him if he likes other kinds of music.  “I  have realized that our American Hot Jazz is much like other  “folk” music forms of other downtrodden peoples: Gypsy music of the Balkans\, Klezmer music of Eastern Europe\, Mexican Mariachi\, Afrocubano\, Taino > music\, and American Appalachian old timey fiddle music.  They all take great skill and discipline and years of practice  to play well. Each of these musical styles succeed at expressing  profound emotion with clarity\, sans irony\, and with little commercial gain.” \nJeff went on to add\, “People play all of these forms to achieve at their best\, a transcendence of suffering.  That is why these forms of music can be considered legitimately to be great Art\, and should be honored and taught\, and certainly not forgotten. Also\, you can dance to it\, and some of it is really funny. I like funny stuff\, and old jazz and blues is full of funny stuff.” \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9rVw_eD9WM

SUMMARY:Why the Goshen Militia Rushed to the Rescue and was Devastated at the Battle of Minisink
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Skye\, Museum Historian\, Speaks about “Why the Goshen Militia Rushed to the Rescue and was devastated at the Battle of Minisink” on Wednesday\, October 7th\, 2015 at 7:30 pm \nJoin us for our seventh and last installment in 2015 of NVM’s History Lecture Series with Neversink Valley Museum Historian Stephen Skye\, at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, (just off Route 209) Cuddebackville\, NY. Suggested donation is $5.00. Light refreshments will be served. \nTo this day the question remains as to why Joseph Brant and his force were operating in the Minisink area in July 1779. There is also a question as to why the American militia scrambled after Brant instead of waiting for Washington’s regular troops. Since the Americans were low on ammunition and were outnumber by Brant’s force\, why did they rush so quickly to battle? Steve Skye has taken a look at life on the frontier during the 18th century and offers a fresh look at the reasons behind the Battle of Minisink Ford. \nMr. Skye is the Museum Historian at the Neversink Valley Museum\, and has presented papers at the Canal Society of New York State’s Winter Symposium and at the World Canals Conference. Mr. Skye has also written extensively on the D&H Canal and American industrial history.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Lecture Series - "Traces of the Past"
DESCRIPTION:Clif Patrick\nThe Neversink Valley Museum of History & Innovation presents its fifth installment of its History Lecture Series on Wednesday August 5\, 2015 at 7:30 pm when it presents Chester Town Historian Clif Patrick speaking about “Traces of the Past” to be held at the D&H Canal Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road (just off of Route 209) in Cuddebackville\, NY.  Light refreshments will be served. $5.00 suggested donation \nOrange County has long been renowned for its natural beauty and productive bounty\, making it a wonderful place to live.  What makes it so beautiful? Family-owned dairies\, orchards and produce farms.  Tree-covered hills and valleys afire with color in autumn. Roads leading to picturesque villages\, towns and cities.  Tucked among all those places are hints of what once was: a trace of a foundation\, a lone smokestack hidden among trees\, an abandoned building\, the outline of a racetrack visible only from above\, and stone walls framing long-overgrown fields. \nJoin us as Clif Patrick\, Town of Chester Historian\, explores some of the well-known history that surrounds us\, including railroads\, cream cheese\, and of course\, the progenitor of the modern trotting and pacing horses: world famous Hamiltonian. We’ll also look a bit closer and find evidence of blast furnaces\, trilobites\, kilns\, an astronomical observatory\, mastodons\, mines\, early settlers and the people came before them\, among other things.

SUMMARY:Notes from the Other Side
DESCRIPTION:The Neversink Valley Museum of History & Innovation presents its third installment of its History Lecture Series on Wednesday\, July 15 at 7:30 pm\, when it presents Shawangunk Journal columnist Marc B. Fried reading from his newest book\, Notes from the Other Side\, to be held at the D&H Canal Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road (just off Route 209) in Cuddebackville\, NY. Light refreshments will be served. Suggested donation $5. \nMost of us know Marc B. Fried for his five books of Shawangunk region history and nature writing. But Fried is also a columnist: his “Notes from the Other Side” has appeared every 3 to 4 weeks for the past 8½ years in the Shawangunk Journal\, a local weekly. Now Fried has selected and edited the best of these periodical writings and compiled them into a 339-page book that bears his column’s title. \nReaders who’ve enjoyed Fried’s regional focus will not be disappointed\, for there are a wealth of anecdotes\, descriptions and musings here that relate to the Shawangunks and the Wallkill and Rondout valleys\, including history\, wilderness\, farm life and gardening. Notes from the Other Side is also filled with exotic adventure\, social commentary and engaging humor. There are stories of cross-country hitchhiking\, winter mountaineering\, overseas travel and fascinating personalities and interactions\, as well as stories from Fried’s earlier years as a professional musician. These span more than half a century and encompass great diversities of geography and culture—an intimate interweaving of action with retrospection\, radical perspectives with rural reminiscing\, of microcosm with macrocosm\, that readers will find both entertaining and thought-provoking. \nFried will give a brief introductory talk beginning at 7:30 pm\, followed by readings from his new work and a book signing.

DESCRIPTION:The Milford\, PA Connection at the Battle of Wounded Knee Lecture by Local Historian with Frank Salvati \nThe Neversink Valley Museum of History & Innovation presents its second installment of its History Lecture Series on Wednesday June 3\, 2015 at 7:30 pm when it presents local historian Frank Salvati speaking about “The Ghost Dance: Tragedy at Wounded Knee and the Milford\, PA Connection” to be held at the D&H Canal Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road (just off of Route 209) in Cuddebackville\, NY. Light refreshments will be served. \nUnable to accept harsh reservation conditions\, the Lakota Sioux\, starving\, miserable and desperate\, turned to the Ghost Dance religion in a last-ditch effort to improve their grim lives\, leading to the tragedy at Wounded Knee. A witness to this tragedy\, Father Francis Craft\, originally from Milford\, PA\, suffered severe injuries during the massacre. His story is remarkable without his adventures among the Sioux and considered even more incredible comes more to light. He alienated everyone from the military\, his superiors in his order and the Sioux. The man fought in four wars\, was a certified surgeon\, a devout Christian with a religious fanaticism bordering on insanity. \nFrank Salvati is a resident of Port Jervis\, New York. SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Neversink Valley Museum of History & Innovation presents its second installment of its History Lecture Series on Wednesday May 6\, 2015 at 7:30 pm when it presents local historian Frank Salvati speaking about “Battle of the Monongahela: British Redcoats vs. Woodland Indians\,” to be held at the D&H Canal Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road (just off of Route 209) in Cuddebackville\, NY.  Light refreshments will be served.\nThe Battle of the Monongahela\, also known as Braddock’s Defeat\, occurred on July 9\, 1755\, when British General Edward Braddock attempted to take the French stronghold of Fort Duquesne\, where Pittsburgh\, PA now stands. Accompanying Braddock was the young Virginia colonel George Washington as his aide-de-camp. The French force consisted mainly of Indians from the Great Lakes region. The British force\, unaccustomed to wilderness warfare\, suffered a terrible defeat at the hands of the French and their Indian allies. This was the first major battle of the French and Indian War.  It would be three years before the British could claim their first major victories.\nFrank Salvati is a resident of Port Jervis\, New York.  He is a passionate student of the Indian wars\, with a particular interest in the North Eastern United States.  He is a popular speaker on the French and Indian Wars\, the American Revolution and the War of 1812.

SUMMARY:"The First Americans" Lecture with Dr. Eugene Boesch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first installment in 2015 of NVM’s History Lecture Series at The D&H Canal Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, Cuddebackville\, NY. featuring Dr. Eugene Boesch. \nThis lecture covers the latest discoveries overturning long-held ideas about the identity of the “First Americans.” Light refreshments will be served. \nDespite decades of digging into the origins of humans in North America\, archeologists are still uncovering new evidence that overturns old ideas. It’s long been believed that prehistoric Eurasians\, who migrated to North America between 15\,000 and 16\,000 years ago over a land bridge crossing the Bering Strait\, were the first “Paleo-indians.” However\, finds by archeologists over the past two decades offer evidence that Paleo-indians were in the Americas as far back as 50\,000 years ago. Scientists also surmised that the Eurasian migrants caused the extinction of large ice age mammals in North America. But there’s evidence that a natural disaster caused these animals to die out and may have led to the demise of the Paleo-indian culture. \nEugene Boesch has undertaken archaeological investigations in the Hudson Valley area for over 30 years. He received a Ph.D. and other graduate degrees from New York University. Dr. Boesch’s work has primarily focused on Pre-Contact period cultures and adaptations in the Eastern Woodlands of North America and on early Euro-American settlement in the Hudson Valley region. \nFor more information about the museum: email us\, call 845-754-8870 or visit our Facebook page.
