SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Neversink Valley Museum of History & Innovation presents its second installment of its History Lecture Series on Wednesday May 6\, 2015 at 7:30 pm when it presents local historian Frank Salvati speaking about “Battle of the Monongahela: British Redcoats vs. Woodland Indians\,” to be held at the D&H Canal Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road (just off of Route 209) in Cuddebackville\, NY.  Light refreshments will be served.\nThe Battle of the Monongahela\, also known as Braddock’s Defeat\, occurred on July 9\, 1755\, when British General Edward Braddock attempted to take the French stronghold of Fort Duquesne\, where Pittsburgh\, PA now stands. Accompanying Braddock was the young Virginia colonel George Washington as his aide-de-camp. The French force consisted mainly of Indians from the Great Lakes region. The British force\, unaccustomed to wilderness warfare\, suffered a terrible defeat at the hands of the French and their Indian allies. This was the first major battle of the French and Indian War.  It would be three years before the British could claim their first major victories.\nFrank Salvati is a resident of Port Jervis\, New York.  He is a passionate student of the Indian wars\, with a particular interest in the North Eastern United States.  He is a popular speaker on the French and Indian Wars\, the American Revolution and the War of 1812.

SUMMARY:"The First Americans" Lecture with Dr. Eugene Boesch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first installment in 2015 of NVM’s History Lecture Series at The D&H Canal Visitor’s Center\, 58 Hoag Road\, Cuddebackville\, NY. featuring Dr. Eugene Boesch. \nThis lecture covers the latest discoveries overturning long-held ideas about the identity of the “First Americans.” Light refreshments will be served. \nDespite decades of digging into the origins of humans in North America\, archeologists are still uncovering new evidence that overturns old ideas. It’s long been believed that prehistoric Eurasians\, who migrated to North America between 15\,000 and 16\,000 years ago over a land bridge crossing the Bering Strait\, were the first “Paleo-indians.” However\, finds by archeologists over the past two decades offer evidence that Paleo-indians were in the Americas as far back as 50\,000 years ago. Scientists also surmised that the Eurasian migrants caused the extinction of large ice age mammals in North America. But there’s evidence that a natural disaster caused these animals to die out and may have led to the demise of the Paleo-indian culture. \nEugene Boesch has undertaken archaeological investigations in the Hudson Valley area for over 30 years. He received a Ph.D. and other graduate degrees from New York University. Dr. Boesch’s work has primarily focused on Pre-Contact period cultures and adaptations in the Eastern Woodlands of North America and on early Euro-American settlement in the Hudson Valley region. \nFor more information about the museum: email us\, call 845-754-8870 or visit our Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Mack Sennett: Madcap Mayhem!
DESCRIPTION:AN EVENING OF FILM AND COMMENTARY\nPresented by Seth Goldman \nSpend a late summer evening with a laugh and a smile! Join us for a lively screening and discussion of pioneering comedies and slapstick silent films at The Neversink Valley Museum of History and Innovation on Wednesday\, September 3\, 2014 at 7:30 pm. Seth Goldman\, director of the Museum’s Institute of Early Film Studies will be your host as he presents\, “Mack Sennett: Madcap Mayhem!” at the D&H Canal Visitor’s Center 58 Hoag Road\, Cuddebackville\, NY (just off Route 209). Light refreshments will be served. \nMack Sennett (January 17\, 1880 – November 5\, 1960) was a Canadian-born American director and actor known as an innovator of slapstick comedy in film. Known during his lifetime as the “King of Comedy\,” he was responsible for developing the careers of Charlie Chaplin\, Mabel Normand\, Gloria Swanson\, W.C. Fields\, Bing Crosby and The Keystone Cops. Sennett was known for his manic\, often physical brand of comedy that offered audiences laughs as well as suspense. Though making a successful transition from silents to sound films\, his reluctance to move away from slapstick caused his career to diminish and bankruptcy ended his career in 1933. For his achievements\, he earned an Honorary Academy Award in 1937 and is still recognized as a genius of early film.
